Midwest Rumble - 9/5/09
My goodness, what a weekend for a tournament. It may have been wet and
dreary on the outside, but inside was nothing but rays of sunshine. This
being a holiday weekend gave the tournament an extra awareness of
valuable family time. Family and friends spending quality time together.
The tournament was held at a great venue, the Clarion, in Springfield, Mo.
Mr. Ken Franck had a full house. As always with the M.M.A.S.C., musicals
and Karate Flag were on time and in full swing at 9:00 am. All divisions had
some great competitors and even some upsets.
This year's point chase is very
close in some divisions. This
tournament as well as the next
two are vital to some
competitors in gaining the
lead to the MMASC
Championship. Grappling
divisions are gaining
momentum.
What stood out with the grapplers at this tournament, was the number of
kids who participated. This has been a great addition to the M.M.A.S.C. this
year, and is only getting better with every tournament.
The Top School Award was presented
to Gary Mann with Top Mount Martial
Arts of West Plains MO, who had only
one more competitor than Richard
Osborn Sr's powerhouse, Ozzie's Crew.
This was a very smooth tournament
with no complaints, no upset or angry
parents, only smiles and hugs all day
long. It was just an awesome weekend.
Congratulations to Mr. Franck for a
well ran tournament, followed by about
60 people walking over to the Hotel Restaurant area to grab a bite to eat,
play some pool, and hang out with friends. People hanging out afterwards
represented karate schools from Springfield, Marshfield, Lebanon, Joplin,
Neosho, Rogersville, and West Plains. Everyone buzzing about the great
tournament and the upcoming MMASC fight night on Sept 19th in
Marshfield. This is what the M.M.A.S.C. is all about. Good times with good
people.

4-State Open - 10/10/09
Dedicated in the memory of Brian
Estep, the 4-State brawl was another
great success for the M.M.A.S.C. and
hosting promoter Mick Sweeten.
Prompt start, smooth rings, and great
competition - as everyone has come
to appreciate. With nearly 125
competitors packing the Holiday Inn
Convention Center, it was another
great one for everyone who could
attend.
Practically all competitors wore armbands in the memory of one of our
regulars in the black belt competitions, Mr. Brian Estep - who recently
passed away. Brian's family was on hand to accept the Grand Champion
trophy on behalf of their late son. It was an emotional moment, and a true
testament of how close the M.M.A.S.C. family is when over 50 black belts
and other competitors lined up to share hugs & condolences with the family
in the middle of the Black Belt ring.
In a very close race, Sensei Mann & Top Mount Martial Arts edged out
Ozzies crew for Top School. Lots of new competitors emerged as future
leaders in all divisions, and showed that they are going to be hard to handle
in the upcoming tournament year, which will have another eleven great
tournaments in 2010. There are a few very close races that are still being
ran for winners in divisions for 2009. They will come down to the last
tournament, November 7th in Springfield MO. Double Points can do a lot to
help someone catch up. Don't miss that tournament, it will be a blast.

Promoter's Touranment 2009 - 11/07/09
This was another awesome event and a great way to wrap up the year! The
divisions were packed at 9 a.m. and things got kicked off with a bang during
the Musical Division. In between the music being played for that division, all
you could hear was cheering coming from Ring 1, while the kids battled it out
in Karate Flag! This has become a great event for 10 and under!
Top School went to Ozzie's Crew, who edged out Top Mount Martial Arts by
only ONE single competitor. This battle for Top School has been a lot of fun
this year, and everyone - all the way down to the youngest student seems to
have something to say about the Top School races.
Many division races came down to this DOUBLE POINTS tournament, so
everyone was on board and ready for a great day of competition. And there
was no disappointment there.

At the end of the tournament, there were several birthday's and
anniversaries to be celebrated - so everyone was invited over poolside for a
complimentary pizza party! This was a sight to see when nearly 75-100
people converged on the Oasis Inn pool to unwind from the day and enjoy
each other's company. It's always nice to see all people from all schools
having a great time together, making new friends, and catching up with old
friends. The M.M.A.S.C. has no shortage of these events and chances for
people to hang out together. That is another thing that makes us who we are.
Later that evening, the MMASC Promoters reserved nearly half of the
Applebee's restaurant on N. Glenstone for our customary after tournament
dinner. We put tables together "family style" and enjoyed our dinner with
what really is a great family. Many entertaining stories were told about things
that happened during the tournament year, who has accomplished what, and
who has grown as Martial Artists, competitors, and as human beings. At least
10 different schools were represented at this dinner, and at the end hugs
and handshakes were exchanged - wishing everyone the best until January
when we kick off the 2010 Tournament Calendar in Rogersville Missouri. I
wish everyone could have been there to witness what has become like a
family reunion when we get together.
