4-State Open - Joplin Missouri, Hosted by Mick Sweeten
October 25, 2008
was cool and nippy
day, but inside the
Holiday Inn located in
Joplin, Missouri the
competition was on
fire! The Second
Annual 4 State Brawl
had a terrific turn-out
of competitors and
spectators. Everyone
was full of excitement
as they attempted to gain more MMASC
points. With only one tournament left for the year, all points are
important. Protocol of the MMASC tournaments is to start at 9:00 am
sharp with Muscial competition, this tournment was no different.
Everyone one was on pins and needles watching the musical division.
But low and behold, the ever poplar, Brandon Osborn, with his
spectacular sword kata, did not take first place. Mark Scroggins, Mr.
Osborn's protegee, soared today and took the victory! Congratulations
to all of Ozzies Crew for taking a very, very close second, Top School
Award to Karate Zone of Joplin, Missouri. The race is still on with Top
Mount Martial Arts for the Top School Award for the year. Go Ozzies
Crew Go!
Top Mount Martial Arts - West Plains MO
On Thursday, October 9, Grand Master Richard Osborn and Master
Steve Irby traveled to West Plains to Top Mount Martial Arts school.
Grand Master Osborn and Master Irby was invited down to conduct a
sparring seminar. Approximately 40 kids showed up for this event, as
well as several adults. These kids have improved so much over the last
seminar back in August. I think they have some of the "psycos-r-us"
instilled in them as they were all eager to get in the ring to bang with the
Masters. Grand Master Osborn and Master Irby worked on the basics as
well as sparring stratagies. If your not familiar with this school, you
should take the time to get to know them. They are very good folks and
extend the greatest hospitality when you are in their area. Many thanks
to Gary and Sherri Mann for inviting us to their hometown.

Midwest Rumble - Hosted by Ken Franck
The ground shook on Sept 20th 2008! It could be felt and heard all
across the midwest as the Midwest Rumble in Springfield Mo set
attendance records for both spectators and competitors. This event was
first class all the way, starting on time, beginning with musicals. A good
job of execution on the part of MMASC promoter Ken Franck to supply a
overflow ring in order to run the large junior divisions in other rings after
the Black Belt competition. This tournament had it all , great venue, ring
star booth, awesome t-shirts, and first class competitors and spectators.
The tournament ended around 2:30 pm. MMASC is on Pace to break
the all time attendance record for a season. Some of this credit goes to
the head to head battle of two top schools, Top Mount Martial Arts from
West Plains and Ozzies Crew from Springfield. At the Midwest Rumble,
earning top school with a whopping 31 competitors was Top Mount
Martial Arts and coming in a close second with 29 was the ever
consistent Ozzy's Crew out Springfield,Mo. Some of the teams present at
this great Karate Zone, R&S TKD, The Edge, Moore's Martial Arts, Joplin
TCOB, Team Victory, Tiger TKD, Solliday Goju, Ernie Reyes West Coast
MA, and Team KICS Karate were just . The MMASC has no equals when
it comes to running great tournaments. Often times we forget the
Judges, timekeepers and scorekeepers. Thanks to all Judges, time
keepers and score keepers for your help!
To highlight some of Ozzies Crew winners at this year's event, Brandon
"The Swordsman" Osborn captured the Black Belt Forms Grand Champ
as he tied and then beat his elder brother, Richard Osborn Jr. Brandon
was determined his brother would not win this Grand Champion and
turned up his game a notch or two. The junior divisions were huge and
all the champions in the junior divisions deserve a round of applause for
their efforts. Congratulations to Jeff Foust, Adult Under Black Belt,
Grand Champion. The judges witnessed some of the toughest forms
and fighting divisions for juniors at this event. Great job to Bob Moore
out of Neosho, Mo who took the light heavy division in adult black belt,
and faced a wall of Ozzies Crew fighters to just slightly come up short for
the overall Black Belt Men's Sparring Grand Championship. Although
the Black Belt Sparring Champion, Richard Osborn, Jr. has his own
team, Tiger TKD, he is claimed as a sister-school of Ozzies Crew. Once
again another premier MMASC event. Only two tournaments are left to
secure the right to be named a MMASC Champion. Are you an MMASC
Champion? See You in Joplin on Oct 25th for 4 State Open Karate
tournament.

Chuck Norris' World Combat League
Grand Master Richard Osborn Sr. - M.M.A.S.C. lifetime member and
tournament promoter, received a call late last week from a
Representative of Chuck Norris's World Combat League. He was
requesting Grand Master Osborn compile a group of MMASC fighters to
head north on the Weekend of Sept 27th to qualify for the new
expansion team, the Kansas City Bombers. What an honor to be
recognized as a circuit and to have the reputation of having the best
fighters in the Midwest. Good Luck to all those who are going up that
weekend. Look out Kansas City. These warriors are training hard to
qualify and make the MMASC proud. We wish them all the best of luck.
Battle of the Queen City - Hosted by Brandon & Richard Osborn Jr.
Wow! What else can you say? If you were
not there for this tournament, you really
missed some action. Again, the tournament
had more competitors than last year, it was
another packed house. Keep this up and
we may have to look for a bigger venue!
Gary Mann, of Top Mount Martial Arts, won top school award. What a a
great group of competitors he has. The show began at 9:00 am sharp
as always. Black Belt Musicals were great with Stephen Renney from
Atlanta, GA, taking first place. Not bad, Mark Scroggins for taking 2nd
Place and Codee Ratliff, third.
With over 95 divisions, there is not enough room on this page to list all
the division winners. I'll just highlight some of the 1st Place Black Belts
here, but be sure to check out the pictures of the tournament, every
picture tells a story. Black Belt Junior forms: 1st Place-Mark Scroggins,

Holiday Kick Off -
Double Points -
Year End Tournament
November is known for Old Man Winter blowing in cold air, but inside the
Oasis Inn and Convention Center Nov. 8th the competition was "Sizzling".
The 2008 Edition of the Holiday Kick-Off was nothing short of a spectacle
of Martial Arts majesty. Going into the last tournament of the year many
divisions were up for grabs. MMASC champions were crowned on this day!
Again, musicals started off the show. Under Black Belt Musicals has
grown to such a huge division, 12 juniors battled for the first award of the
day. Then, after the juniors put on a show, a battle started in the Black
Belt Musical's. Mark Scroggins and Brandon Osborn have been battling all
year for the title, then a new comer emerged. The "High Flying" Justin
Gray out of Oklahoma City,OK came up to play spoiler in this division. It
was close scores for all three with Brandon Osborn coming out on top.
A big welcome to Team Legacy out of OK City for coming up and giving us
a great show from all their competitors. Again, a tight race ensued with the
Top School trophy. Rounding out the top three again were Ozzy's Crew,
Top Mount Martial Arts, and Karate Zone, with Ozzy's Crew coming out on
top! It is going to be a close one for the overall team Championship for the
year! I would like to name a few other teams in attendance who have been
supporting the MMASC all year long, Joplin TCOB, Team Victory, Team
Edge, Tiger TKD, Ernie Reyes West Coast Martial Arts, Combined Arts
Dojo, Moore's Martial Arts, KICKS Martial Arts, Midwest TKD, The Martial
Arts Foundation, R and S TKD and many others have helped the MMASC
become the best ran circuit in the country.
Going back to the competition, the junior divisions are always loaded. One
of the things about our junior divisions is you never know who is going to
win. You have favorites in the divisions, but there seems to be someone at
each event that keeps getting better and better and a new winner
emerges. Coming up this year we will be featuring more juniors and
competitors on the new www.mmasc.net. In our sparring divisions, from 6
year old Beg. divisions to Senior Black Belts, when those pads strap on
there is the best point sparring you will see anywhere in the United States.
Rounding out the day, we had some of the largest Black Belt Fighting
divisions we have seen in a while, mainly due to the fearless junior black
black belts Mark Scroggins and Jackie Burton moving up into the Adult BB
fighting divisions! Great Job Men. But the story of the day was JJ Johnson
coming off a major back injury that is now healed and coming up with the
Black Belt Grand Champ in Sparring.
Going into next year we have 12 events starting in Jan. and ending in
December. That means 12 months of non-stop action for the MMASC
calendar. We want everyone to come and be apart of the best circuit in
the Midwest! We will be looking at adding divisions and including sport
grappling into our events next year! There is not a better place to be for
fellowship and great competition! We look forward to meeting you next
year on the 2009 MMASC chase for the Championship!

The MMASC All-Stars made their last
appearance for the year at the Mid-American
Martial Arts Championship hosted by Donnie
and Andi Wilhelm, on Saturday, December 6.
The Reeds Spring YMCA was the sight for this
pioneered event. On the East side of the gym,
the All-Stars took their place as they competed
in a typical Open Karate Tournament. Sifu
Wilhelm is a new promoter for the MMASC and
followed the MMASC tournament theme.
Brandon Osborn, Codee Ratliff, Mark
Scroggins, Austin Alcorn, Jeff Faust, Earl
Gulley, Keisha Colvin, Kyle Hudson and Tavian
Chamberlin all took 1st Place Honors in their
divisions. Brandon, Codee, Mark and Keisha
all received a Grand Champion Award. This
tournament had some new and tough
competitors, but the All-Stars were on the top
of their game. Great Job All-Stars.
Congratulations to Donnie and Andi Wilhelm
for hosting a successful event.
M.M.A.S.C. All Stars Ride Again
On the West side of the gym two rings were devised using interlocking
mats for a Grappling tournament. Something new and unique being
added to the MMASC tournaments beginning in 2009. Now this is what
we call an open tournament. Grappling tournaments and ratings will be
incorporated into the MMASC schedule of tournaments. Grapplers will
have the same opportunities to compete, earn points and be rated in their
weight divisions with MMASC. Grappling will run concurrent with the
Karate Tournament. For those of you not so familiar with this sport,
Grappling is the gripping, handling, and controlling of an opponent
without the use of striking, typically using various grappling holds, choke
holds, throws, joint locks and pinning techniques. The MMASC is excited
to add this componet to its relm of pioneering. Competition seems fearce
in this catagory.
HOT new division for 2009 tournaments!

Saturday Night must be alright for fighting, ‘cause Osborn’s Tae Kwon Do
was standing room only with fighters on Saturday evening, January 17.
Nearly 100 people showed up for “Fight Night”. Promoters, competitors,
parents and friends were in attendance for this learning experience. Some
drove for two hours just to attend this event. As many people were in
attendance, you might have thought you were at a tournament.
Upstairs 15 pairs of adults lined up toe-to-toe to do battle. Then “GO!”
Pictures and plagues were falling to the ground everywhere. Two minutes
of sparring and then “switch”. One side of the line moved down by one and
presto, a new sparring partner. Adults were standing on the sidelines,
anxiously awaiting their turn to jump into the line. “You need a break?” was
called out by a fighter anxiously waiting to get in on the action. No one
wanted to be left out. This was a great experience to spar with someone
new and learn new tactics. It was a great cardiovascular workout, fighting
toe-to-toe made you have to stay in there, learn to block, and figure out
how to get your opponent off of you. Male and females fought each other
to assist in this learning experience. Very quickly the windows were fogged
over and (even though it was only 20 degrees outside) someone asked if
we could turn on the air conditioner. Everyone seemed to be have a great
time.
Downstairs the same experience was happening for the juniors. The juniors
utilized the ring and did round robins. One junior stayed in the ring,
building stamina and perfecting skills, and fought every other junior in
attendance. Then it was the next junior’s opportunity to get their 10 or
more fights in. These kids slept well this evening, no doubt.
Grand Master Richard Osborn went over the next season’s schedule for the
MMASC. He reviewed the rules and objectives and discussed how
Grappling was going to be introduced at the Sport Karate Tournaments.
Donnie Wilhelm, the grappling guru, gave insight to the grappling rules and
what to expect at the tournaments. The next fight night is scheduled in April
to be held at Tommy Barker’s school.
Pizza was brought in for all the attendees, all over the school, there were
pods of people gathered, talking strategies, laughing and just plain good
‘ole fellowship happening everywhere. What a sight, ten or more different
karate back grounds, schools and philosophies mingling and have a good
time. This is what the MMASC is all about. Making new friends, enriching
lives, and providing the best competition, (I’m going to say it!) in the Nation.
Because come tournament day, every one of these competitors will come
with their A-game. They’ll take this experience, learn by it, and walk into the
ring with new found confidence and skills.
There may be a few other rating systems out there. Some will try to mock
the MMASC. They’ll take some parts of the MMASC and claim it as their
own. But not one of them have the promoter support, experience and top-
notch membership like the MMASC. AND NO ONE HAS THE HEART like the
MMASC!

MMASC Fight Night at Osborn's TKD -- 1/17/09
Only the Rath of Mother Nature kept the MMASC Tournament hosted by Kjn
Tommy Barker of Lebanon, Missouri from a breaking a record of 200
competitors. A big congratulations to Promoter Tommy Barker who
represents Ernie Reyes World Martial Arts!!
As usual, the M.M.A.S.C. Rated Tournament started and ended on time, even
with the additional competitors and divisions. This tournament introduced the
first RATED Grappling and Karate Flag Divisions. What competition!!
Karate Flag is an event, normally for younger competitors that helps students
develop skills they need for sparring - such as footwork, timing, and
coordination - all without contact. The young competitors loved it, because
there were over 30 of them in the three Karate Flag divisions.
The grapplers showed up hungry and left satisfied, as the M.M.A.S.C. now
provides them a place to grapple for sport on a regular basis, and a rating
system that will rate them all season, in 12 great tournaments!!
Top School went to Sensei Gary Mann & the crew from Top Mount Martial
Arts. Also, good job Ozzies Crew, who came in a close second.
Awesome start to the tournament season! This is going to be an awesome
year!

Pursuit of Passion 2 Perfection - 1/31/09
Promoter Donnie Wilhelm Hosts Grappling Seminar at his Dojo - 2/7/09
Sensei Donnie Wilhelm hosted a seminar on Grappling on Saturday,
February 7, 2009 . The presenter, Todd Lawrence, held everyone’s
attention for more than 3 hours of continuous schooling and heavy duty work
out. The very humble Mr. Lawrence is a purple belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. By
accounts of those who have attended the seminar - this was some of the
best hands on instruction in BJJ that many of them had seen. Even the
experienced ground fighters said that Mr. Lawrence's approach to teaching
and the material was outstanding! Great work Mr. Lawrence!
Among the spectators was Grand Master Osborn. Participants of this event
included one twelve year old young man, one female and fourteen other men
of various ages, of which included MMASC Promoter, Gary Mann.
The techniques in arm bars, leg locks, positioning, and chokes performed by
Mr. Lawrence appeared to be excellent and flowed together smoothly. The
material included many techniques and counters to those techniques.
Thanks to Sensei Donnie Wilhelm for inviting us to this seminar. You can
see the pictures on our pictures page. MMASC has began a grappling
circuit, offering a monthly tournament that will be rated. Contenders will be
given points for each tournament they participate in. At the end of the year,
they will be included in the MMASC Awards Banquet and receive recognition
for their final rankings.
